Topanga Canyon isn't the best road in Malibu, of course considering the variety around here that isn't really saying much. Not only is it a state highway, which means CHP patrol, it is also one of the primary routes between PCH and Hwy. 101 so there is plenty of traffic to contend with.

By itself the road is actually not bad; a narrow strip of pavement that winds its way along a small river at the southern end and climbs up over some foothills at the northern end. The problem is the traffic and residents, aside from the commuter traffic there are plenty of houses and even a few businesses that front the road. I'm not a big fan of driveways around blind corners, but that is one of the many hazards you will find here.

The southern end is quite scenic, and there are a few markets and shops that may provide a good rest stop, but there is just too much congestion to make this route much fun. Even motorcycles may have difficulty here, as passing the vehicle in front of you just puts you behind the next vehicle in line.

At the northern end, just before the road drops down into the valley and towards the 101, there is a series of switchbacks that are quite fun. Assuming you are able to pass through this section traffic free, the views winding down the mountain are quite impressive and the curves are not too bad either. However, this small segment really isn't worth the rest of the road. Unless you are looking for a cut-through from the valley to the beach, I would recommend another route.
